ZOOM ON ...marine mammals 🦭

Accompanied by the consultancy firms Setec In Vivo, Biotope and Quiet Ocean, Ailes Marines is assessing the impact of the construction site on marine mammals

🔎 Who are the marine mammals that live in the Bay of Saint-Brieuc?

As part of the initial assessment of the impact study carried out between 2012 and 2015, Setec In vivo aimed to determine the species present, their distribution and to identify their behaviour.

There are mainly 5 species in the Bay of Saint-Brieuc, which may frequent the wind farm site for transit, feeding, etc.

Preservation of the environment

Preserving the environment of marine mammals
and reducing the potential impact of the drilling of the wind farm
is essential for Ailes Marines.

Monitoring of the marine environment 🤿

In a second phase, studies conducted by Setec In Vivo determined the effects of the project on the environment.

All of these impacts will of course continue to be monitored during the construction phase as well as during the operational phase. A baseline study (updating the initial mapping) was carried out between 2020-2021 by the consultancy firms Biotope, Quiet Ocean and Bioconsult SH / HiDef using several methods: hydrophones (to hear and identify the behaviour of mammals), aircraft and boat.

The high-definition aircraft and hydrophone measurements will continue until the end of 2026 to monitor marine mammal populations over the long term. This date includes the construction phase as well as the first 3 years of operation.

Thereafter, one year of aircraft monitoring will be carried out every 5 years.
