Reduction and avoidance measures

Reducing the disturbance of the Balearic Shearwater in periods of interbreeding presence

Objectives and methodology

The objective of the measure is to inform yard personnel to enable the avoidance of shearwater rafts by Personnel Transfer Vessels (PTVs) during work at sea and to raise public awareness.

This measure was aimed at departures from Saint-Quay-Portrieux (the initial port of the construction phase), as the impact study had revealed that shearwater rafts were present between this port and the offshore construction area. However, the location of the port has changed and it will be located in Lézardrieux. The shearwater rafts are no longer on the shipping lanes and the risk of encountering them is now negligible, thereby reducing the impact identified in the impact study. The measure has therefore been adapted to meet the new needs.

The measure has a double scope:

Information to the public

Following prior collaborative work between Ailes Marines and local ornithological associations, an information and awareness brochure will be distributed to the public and to those involved in the yachting industry at local events. These documents will also be relayed by tourist offices, sailing schools or even certain maritime operators. Two annual awareness-raising operations will also be implemented from 2021 to 2023.

Awareness raising for CTV operators (Ailes Marines Transfer Vessels)

Other actions will specifically target the personnel on the ships linked to the wind farm yard. In this respect, the CTV staff will be sensitized before the start of the construction site. Captains and crew members will be trained in species recognition. If a raft is detected, the ship's captain will be obliged to transmit the position of the Balearic Shearwaters encountered (so that the information can be circulated to all Ailes Marines seagoing personnel), and to avoid the said raft in order to limit their disturbance.

Location of actions

Awareness-raising operations will be organised in two coastal communities to the east and west of the Bay of Saint-Brieuc.
