Press release
Ailes Marines , a subsidiary of Iberdrola, has installed Brittany's first offshore wind turbine.
Kerantour-Lézardrieux / Saint-Brieuc / Paris – May 12, 2023
● Ailes Marines , a company 100% owned by the Iberdrola group, today announces the installation of the first wind turbine in the offshore wind farm in the bay of Saint-Brieuc and therefore, the first offshore wind turbine in Brittany.
● The phase of installation work on the 62 wind turbines is now underway. They will be installed line by line, before their gradual commissioning.
● Around 900 jobs are mobilized for the construction and assembly of wind turbines on the port of Le Havre (76) and around forty for the electrical equipment of the masts on the Brest polder (29).

Brittany's first offshore wind turbine
The installation of the first of the 62 wind turbines which will equip the Saint-Brieuc wind farm was carried out on May 11 by the Ailes Marines contractor, the company Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy. This operation was carried out from the jack-up vessel Brave Tern of the Norwegian company Fred Olsen windcarrier.
The first wind turbine in the Saint-Brieuc park was installed on position number SB44 located on the northern part of the site. Thanks to this installation, Brittany has its first offshore wind turbine.
“ This successful installation of the first offshore wind turbine in the Saint-Brieuc park represents a great day for Brittany and for the project. It means that we are entering the home stretch of the project, which will result in the production of renewable and carbon-free energy for the Bretons. After more than a decade of effort and commitment from the Brittany region, local stakeholders and Iberdrola teams, this first wind turbine manufactured in Le Havre and equipped in Brest is also the culmination of a great industrial adventure. , of which we can be very proud. » says Emmanuel Rollin, Managing Director of Iberdrola France.
Starting point for the installation phase of the 62 wind turbines
The phase of installation work on the 62 wind turbines has now started.
This starting point is decisive because it is emblematic of the last phase of installation of the park. The Brave Tern installation vessel will carry out several rotations in the coming months from Le Havre, each time with the constituent elements of 4 wind turbines on board.
The wind turbines at the Saint-Brieuc wind farm are manufactured in France, on the Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy industrial site, located in the port of Le Havre (76). On this dedicated site, around 900 jobs are mobilized for their construction and assembly.
The masts of the 62 wind turbines are previously equipped by the company Haizea Wind on the Brest polder. This new industrial activity continues to employ around forty jobs on the site for the mechanical and electrical assembly of all the internal elements of the masts.
A multi-step installation
At sea, the 90 m high wind turbine mast is first lifted from the barge then lowered by crane onto the transition piece of the “jacket” foundation, before being fixed there. Secondly, the nacelle is lifted and installed on the mast. Finally, the 3 blades are fixed on the rotor of the nacelle.
The structure installed at sea measures 209 meters at the blade tip and has a rotor of 167 meters in diameter. It is designed to best respond to the wind regime that characterizes the bay of Saint-Brieuc.
For the first wind turbine, these operations were successfully carried out by the Brave Tern, a ship specializing in the installation of wind turbines at sea. For each rotation from Le Havre to the Saint-Brieuc park site, the Brave Tern carries 4 masts, 4 nacelles and 12 blades.
Information on works for sea users
In order to inform residents and in particular users of the sea, Ailes Marines has opened an online information space* dedicated to maritime work. It presents the nature and organization of the work, as well as information concerning navigation, in addition to the orders of the Maritime Prefecture.
