71% of Côtes d'Armor residents in favor of the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm project

Saint-Brieuc / Paris – January 20, 2021

Ailes Marines commissioned IFOP, a survey and market research institute, to carry out a study on the trend and perception of public opinion regarding the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm project . This study, which took place in December 2020, focused on a representative sample of the population living in the Breton departments of Finistère, Ille -et-Vilaine, Morbihan, Côtes -d'Armor, as well as than in Loire -Atlantique. The results attest to the support of the Costa Rican, Breton and Loire-Atlantique populations for the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm project.

Survey results

According to the IFOP survey, the question asked: “ Are you in favor or opposed to carrying out this project?” ”, 71% of people questioned in the Côtes-d’Armor department responded that they were in favor of the project. Of these, 25% were “completely favorable” and 46% “somewhat favorable” .

According to the result of the IFOP survey, 77% of the inhabitants of the department questioned consider to be informed of the project, of which 55% responded that they had precise knowledge.

In the departments of Brittany (Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine, Morbihan, Côtes-d'Armor) and Loire-Atlantique, support for the project reached 81%, with 26% “completely favorable” opinions and 55% “rather favorable” . 72% of residents of the departments surveyed considered themselves informed about the project, of which 33% responded that they had specific knowledge.

Support from the population for the challenges of the energy transition

The survey shows that 82% of people questioned in the Côtes d'Armor support the development of marine renewable energies in order to increase Brittany's energy autonomy.

The people questioned in the departments of Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine, Morbihan, Côtes- d'Armor and Loire-Atlantique almost all encourage the development of marine renewable energies, 91% say that it is a good thing, 33% are even convinced of it .
These results attest to the interest of the Breton and Loire -Atlantique population in the development of renewable marine energy projects.

The Saint Brieuc offshore wind farm will contribute to Brittany's energy autonomy

According to The 2020 Barometer of renewable electrical energies in France , with a power of 1,906 megawatts of renewable electricity production, Brittany ranks sixth of the thirteen major French metropolitan regions. In 2020, the production of just under 4,000 gigawatt-hours (GWh) made it possible to cover 15.5% of the electricity consumption in the Brittany region. The Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm is a major renewable energy production project supported by the State. This project is part of the national energy transition policy applied by the various successive governments since 2011.

The Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm will produce 1,820 GWh annually, which corresponds to the annual domestic electricity consumption of 835,000 inhabitants (heating included), or a quarter of the inhabitants of Brittany. The Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm alone will produce 9% of the electricity consumption of the Brittany region.

Reminder of the IFOP survey methodology

The IFOP study was carried out on a sample of 1,000 people, representative of the population living in Brittany and Loire-Atlantique, i.e. 200 people aged 18 and over interviewed per department.

For Côtes- d'Armor, an additional sample of 301 people was added , representative of the population, aged 18 and over, i.e. 501 people interviewed in total in the department.

The representativeness of the samples was ensured by the quota method (sex, age, profession of the person interviewed) after stratification by department and category of agglomeration.

The interviews of the main sample were carried out via the Internet from December 10 to 18, 2020. The interviews of the Côtes d'Armor sample were carried out by telephone from December 18 to 21, 2020.

For 80 years, IFOP has been the reference in surveys and market studies. Its approach is based on the combination of perspectives: sectoral expert perspective, business perspective, prospective perspective and international vision. Its activity is structured around the historic Opinion division as well as its sectoral marketing expertise.
