Brest Polder: Ailes Marines has selected the company Navantia to manufacture the foundations of the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm
Brest – September 16, 2019 – Ailes Marines , in charge of the development, construction, installation and operation of the offshore wind farm in the bay of Saint-Brieuc, has selected the Spanish company Navantia for the manufacturing of the 62 foundations of the offshore wind turbines which will equip the park.
September
Fabrication of foundations
The foundation technology chosen by Ailes Marines is a three-legged jacket type. These are structures in the form of a steel wire mesh weighing up to 1,175 tonnes, with a height of up to 74 meters, fixed to the seabed by piles.
The components of the foundation will be assembled on the Brest polder by the company Navantia on a dedicated space of 11 hectares located to the north of the site.
Complete assembly will take place in Spain and the port of Brest will be mobilized again for a temporary storage area before sending the foundations to the site.
Thus, the polder and its “heavy parcel” quay, as well as the other quays of the port, will be used for reception, prefabrication, logistics and the transport of components.
This open-air project, organized horizontally, will mobilize between 2021 and 2023, a minimum of 250 full-time equivalent jobs over 2 years. Among the targeted professions: welders, oxycutters, handling operators, scaffolders, quality supervisors, among others.
The Brittany Region and the port of Brest thus contribute to the development of the new industrial sector represented by marine energies.
" Ten years ; This is the time it took for this offshore wind project to come to fruition on an industrial level. To do this, the Brittany Region anticipated the needs of Ailes Marines and created a “marine energy” terminal that meets the expectations of the sector. She is happy today to welcome Navantia, who has extensive experience in the subject. This project is a founding step in the emergence of the marine energy sector in Brittany. A first step which will position the port of Brest as an anchor point for the sector on the Atlantic coast, and undoubtedly beyond. This stage is also the start of a new energy and industrial history of Brittany, for which the baton will be taken by floating offshore wind power which should reach our shores as quickly as possible. »
“The choice of the company Navantia for the construction of the jacket foundations on the Brest polder concretizes the industrial commitments announced by Ailes Marines for the construction of the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm. Along with that of the wind turbines, which will be manufactured in the port of Le Havre, this is the second major industrial installation launched thanks to the Saint-Brieuc project. We are proud that Navantia is the first occupant of the Brest port polder and brings a minimum of 250 jobs to Brittany. »
“Navantia and Windar are committed to this important project, bringing their experience and know-how in the field of marine renewable energies, in particular by providing support to Ailes marines and the Brittany region in their desire to position the port of Brest as major player in renewable energies in Europe. Navantia is committed to full collaboration with local industries for the development of new activities and jobs in order to contribute to the future of the Brittany region. »

About the Brittany Region and the port of Brest
Owner of the port, the Brittany Region has been carrying out a major development project there since 2017 in order to increase, on the one hand, maritime traffic and, on the other hand, to develop an industrial terminal dedicated mainly to the sector. marine energies. Over the period 2017-2022, the amount of investments amounts to €220 million, financed mainly by the Region but also by Europe (FEDER funds), Brest Métropole, the Department of Finistère and the CCI. For two years, earthworks have made it possible to consolidate and make viable the current 40 ha polder to accommodate businesses. At the same time, the construction of a 400 m long EMR quay and a 900 m dike began. These infrastructures came together to form a new 14 ha paddock which, once backfilled, will extend the polder over a total usable area of 54 ha by 2024.
