Capital importance in France
This contract marks the final investment decision for this 2.4 billion euro project, and underlines Ailes Marines ' commitment to the sustainable economic recovery of French industry through the establishment of a well-defined industrial plan, which will lead to the creation of new factories and highly qualified jobs in the renewable energy sector in France.
The wind turbines at the Saint-Brieuc park will be manufactured in France, on the tailor-made industrial site of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, located in the port of Le Havre (76), where the blades, nacelles and generators will be manufactured. This site also includes a logistics zone dedicated to the installation of offshore wind projects. Manufacturing will begin in 2021 and will create 750 jobs.
On the other hand and as announced in September 2019, certain components of the wind turbine foundations will be assembled on a dedicated 11 hectare site on the Brest port polder. The heavy lift dock in Brest, as well as potentially other French ports, will be used for construction, logistics and transport of components to the wind farm.
Saint-Brieuc is a project of capital importance in the context of the energy transition and the fight against global warming in France. The construction phase is expected to begin in 2021. Once the wind farm is fully operational in 2023, the 496 megawatts will produce enough renewable energy to meet the needs of nearly 835,000 consumers.
“Coming out of the current crisis, renewable energies will be essential to economic recovery in Europe. By making our final investment decision of 2.4 billion euros in this offshore wind farm and concluding the largest contract of the project, we demonstrate that at Iberdrola we are keeping our promises to continue our record investment plans, to support our supply chain and create thousands of sustainable jobs. »
“By selecting 8 MW wind turbines from Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm is guaranteed to benefit from the most advanced and efficient technology on the market. Through this project, Ailes Marines is fully committed to the development of the French offshore wind industry; a sector that creates thousands of highly qualified jobs, thus contributing to the sustainable economic and industrial recovery in France and the objective of achieving zero net emissions thanks to renewable energies. »
“This signature is a crucial step in the realization of the first wind farm project in Brittany and is a pillar for the launch of our industrial project in Le Havre. This is good news for the ecological transition in France and Brittany, as well as for the restructuring of the sector and the creation of sustainable jobs in the region. We are very proud to be the industrial partner of Ailes Marines in this superb regional project. »
The Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm
Located 16.3 kilometers from the Breton coast, the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm will be equipped with 62 8 MW model SG 8.0-167 DD direct drive wind turbines, supplied by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy and perfectly adapted to the wind conditions. and sea which characterize the bay of Saint-Brieuc.
With a maximum height of 207 meters at the blade tip and a rotor of 167 meters in diameter, the direct drive platform developed by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, world leader in offshore wind, benefits from a return of unrivaled experience. Since 2006, more than 1,000 direct drive wind turbines have been installed and commissioned on offshore wind farms in Europe and around the world.
Saint-Brieuc will be the fourth offshore wind farm developed in Europe by Iberdrola and equipped with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy offshore wind turbines, after West of Duddon Sands located in the Irish Sea (108 wind turbines of 3.6 MW), Wikinger in the Baltic Sea ( 70 5 MW wind turbines) and East Anglia One off the British coast (102 7 MW wind turbines).
